A Letter to My 10 Year Old Self

Hi Chan, knowing you the way I do, you are no doubting trying to figure how it was possible for this letter to get to you. Stop focusing on that, focus on the words of wisdom I’m about to impart to you after 22 years on earth.

At this point, I know you are still hurting over Daddy’s death but don’t worry, everything is going to be okay. One day you will wake up and be able to remember the good times you had with him without tearing up.

Sweetheart, you won’t be good at everything it’s okay. Failing is not the end of the world. You are still a poor dancer (although you now have a lot more rhythm) and you still suck at music but be okay with it. Work on your strengths and ensure you are happy with whatever you choose to do.

Step outside your shell. Tell people how you feel. Be bold. Don’t let your lack of confidence hinder you. Smile hard. Play hard. Love hard. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Today, you are a confident, beautiful and talented young lady. You are everything you have imagined and more. Sweetheart, you can do it.

Dream as big as you can and then be tenacious. Sometimes the going will get rough but hang on. It is always darkest just before dawn. Mom is the best backup you could have ever hoped for. Between her and God, you will be fine. Try not to quarrel with her too much in your teenaged years. Remember both of you are adjusting to you becoming a young lady.

Chan, it is okay to outgrow people. Stop trying to mix your summer and all year-round people. Some persons will only be in your life for a season. Some will evoke deep feelings and will hurt you badly but after the tears and the pain, ensure you walk away with a lesson. They were only in your life in a season for a specific reason. There are some people you will meet who you will have a real connection with. Love, try to refrain from quarrelling with Lavanjah when you do meet him. He is stubborn but he means well. I can assure you that you will adore William even though he will test your patience continually. Between the two, you will end up with two of the best friends in the whole wide world.

Final lesson, my dear, trust your instincts. You will never go wrong. If your instincts are telling you something, don’t hold back because of cowardice, check it out. You will spare yourself a lot of trouble and heartache that way.

My dear, keep the people you love close to you and ensure they treat you well. Value yourself and they will value you. Learn to say no. Stay close to God, have a good life and keep smiling. Baby girl you were born to soar.

With all my love,
Your 22 Year Old Self

P.S.: You have a huge surprise in store with the crush you are currently having.
