Lessons Learned From Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath

So guys! On a chance encounter, I learnt about Malcolm Gladwell and how thought-provoking his writing was. I looked him up on TED Talk and sure enough I fell in love. Here are 10 lessons learnt from Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath.

  1. Your acknowledged strength can also be the source of your biggest weakness.
  2. You don’t have to play the same game that everyone else is playing. As a smaller opponent, you are likely to lose. Use the most unexpected strategy.
  3. What is considered an advantage can quickly become a disadvantage.
  4. Making choices should never be the simple case of selecting a best option and a second-best option. It should be a choice between two very different options, each with its own strengths and drawbacks. There are times and places where it is better to be a Big Fish in a Little Pond than a Little Fish in a Big Pond, where the apparent disadvantage of being an outsider in a marginal world turns out not to be a disadvantage at all.
  5. Being born or faced with disadvantages can force you to develop skills that would have otherwise lain dormant.
  6. When you experience what you had first feared, you stop being afraid of being afraid. That’s when the exhilaration kicks in. You have faced fear and won.
  7. It is possible to emerge from the darkest hell healed and restored.
  8. Forgiveness is as powerful as revenge. It is up to you to decide the kind of impact you want that power to have.
  9. Challenge the status quo. It is not always right and rarely ever break barriers!
  10. The powerful are not as powerful as they seem – nor the weak as weak.

So tell me, what are your thoughts on lessons highlighted above?

    XOXO
    Chañel.

    Emotionally-Unavailable is NOT AVAILABLE

    image

An encounter with a friend this weekend raised something in my mind. I am confused! Why do females always try to change a male’s mind? This is something that seems to be in females’ make-up, we always believe that we can change a man’s mind! The fact is, this doesn’t always work out so well for us and we are left holding a crap hand of cards.

“If a man tell you that he is not ready for a relationship; believe him the first time.” – Steve Harvey.

Life is too short to waste time trying to change a man’s mind. It is my firm belief that a man shouldn’t need help knowing if he wants you or not. If he tells you that he isn’t ready for a relationship, believe him, no matter his reasoning. I’ve seen cases where the man is still hanged-up over his ex. Do you know what that makes him? It makes him emotionally-unavailable! While I applaud you females for thinking you can make him emotionally-available or change his mind, aren’t you forgetting your value and all your self-worth that you will probably have to sacrifice if you fail?

    Let your eagle SOAR!

    image

About a year ago someone hugged me tightly and said, “You know what you remind me of? An eagle! Girl, go forth and whatever you do, spread your wings and soar!” At the time I didn’t think much of it but as I sit back and do some introspection, I can truly say that God has been demonstrating to me how to unfurl and use my wings.

One thing I have learned is that God allows every incident in your life to happen to teach/prepare you. A few years ago I had a bad case of stage fright whenever I spoke in public. I also felt that my ability to write had been nullified. I was left empty. But this is something you need to know. Sometimes, when God intends to bless you, He slowly empties you. He begins to remove any impediments to your blessing. Only then will He begin to fill you up.

A man after God’s own heart

    image

I don’t know about you guys but this summer seems to be the engagement season! I turn my back for a few seconds and by the time I turn around, I hear that another friend or acquaintance is married! Okay, okay, maybe I’m exaggerating but you get the point.

In recent times, I’ve not been really concerned about marriage but this season have found me giving the entire institution some thought. This is due primarily to the fact that persons have suddenly seen it fit to constantly remind me that I am now nearer to 25 than 20 and thus, I needed to get cracking.

As I knelt praying, early Monday morning, I found myself thinking about how my perception of my perfect guy has changed over the years. When I first discovered guys, I envisioned my ideal husband to be all looks and no substance. I had it all planned and nothing else mattered as long as we both looked good. As I grew older, I started to realize that the substance mattered and my prayer changed to focus not so much on looks but more on his substance and character. By this point it was all about WHAT I WANTED.

Your Tongue and Faith – The Dynamic Duo

    image

There is life and death in the power of the tongue! Faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains! Faith “calls” it done and that settles it! There are so many scriptures/quotes that deal with the individual powers of the tongue and faith. Can you imagine if they were put together as a dynamic duo?

It was the summer of 2012. I had just completed 6th form and gotten my acceptance letters for 3 universities. One in the States (giving me a 1/2 scholarship) and two in Jamaica. I decided to forgo the one in States because this girl was dumb and in love (not that I regret the decision now).

The TEST will end after you PASS.

    image

I found myself thinking about God’s tests for us yesterday. The Lord reminded me that in the same way that trials come to make us stronger, tests come to hone us. The key thing about tests is that once you are given it, you have to pass it in order for you to move on to the next level. The thing that happens to most of us is that as Christians, we all want to get to the next level but few of us want to experience the tests that the Lord use to get us there.

I am writing to tell you tonight, if you want the fruits of the Spirit, you have to pass your test. If you want the spiritual gifts, you have to pass the test. If you want to get more blessings, you have to pass the test. If you want to go to new spiritual heights, you must pass the test. The Lord’s tests are just like SAT or CSEC, there is no if, nor but, nor maybe, you have to pass the test in order to move up. In fact, if you fail, you will continue to resit that exam until you do pass.

    Change your strategy.

    image

In the same way that we have tests to pass, the devil has assigned himself tests. He has tasked himself with seeing how many of us he can get condemned to damnation. Now unlike some of us, he is a very very dedicated pupil. He researches and studies his subjects very well. He endeavors to become an expert on each one of us.

A few years ago, the Lord gave me a resounding message, “CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY!”. A few months ago, He showed me that this could not only be applied to my tests but my temptations/trials as well. He directed me to the Israelites’ exodus to the Promised Land. He showed me that He did not allow them to use the same strategy when faced with different kinds of enemies.
